Hope

This is a Guest Post by Jennifer Owenby.  Jennifer is a writer, wife and mother living in Portland.

I’ve lived some dark days.

I’d been physically, mentally, verbally and financially abused; beaten down, controlled, and threatened. My shoulders bowed from the weight of the anguish and lack of hope. Promises of being hunted and killed rang through the air on a regular basis. But one particular evening gave me strength to make a plan, and one friend took time to plant a seed of hope. The next day I put my two small children in that friend’s truck, threw a few garbage bags of our clothes and toys in the back, and left my ex-husband. That choice led us 2000 miles from home followed by three long terrifying years of hiding.

Years later I don’t recognize my reflection in the mirror. I am not that woman any longer. However, if my friend hadn’t taken the time to plant that seed of hope I’d be dead.

Today I work at a staffing agency in Portland, Oregon. I have watched the economy tank, and begin creeping upwards again. A job applicant called me the other day. He asked questions concerning open positions; did we have work for him? Could I take a brief moment to call him back?  He just needed hope. I returned the phone call. I see this daily in my line of work, people hurting, and hope fading. At times I am able to restore it.

Hope inspires dreams, belief in our selves, and belief in others. Hope gives us energy, lightness inside. We pass it to someone without realizing it’s contagious through a smile, a kind deed, opening a door for someone, or taking time to listen. I don’t believe that we truly understand how we are capable of affecting another person.

We have all known someone affected by depression or experiencing a difficult life situation. My challenge to you is to consider these things: how long does it really take to speak a kind word to someone, buy someone coffee, listen to a friend’s problem? It’s impossible to know what lives people lead behind closed doors, what they are thinking, how they are feeling behind that smile. Just remember what you say or do might save a life.

Giving and the Power of Multiplication

Many of us have heard the saying “you reap what you sew”.    It is basically stating that whatever you do will come back to you in the future. Whatever you give you will get.   How many of us have given much thought to that saying?

Chances are, you have heard that used in some sort of a negative connotation.  Something along the lines of; a criminal gets caught and serves a jail sentence or a bully you knew in school finally got what was coming to them when they picked on the wrong person.

Many people have referred to this as a law, principle or proverb.  At any rate, let’s take a look at this saying with a positive outlook.

I am a believer in that whatever you give, whatever you radiate out, will come back to you.  I also believe that it will not only come back to you, but it will come back to you multiplied.

Nature’s example of giving and receiving – Have you ever planted a fruit or vegetable.  If you plant corn what do you get?  I hope you answered corn.  If you plant wheat what do you get?   Wheat.  If you plant beans what do you get? Beans.  If you plant money what do you get?  Did that one cause you to pause a little?  I don’t mean literally planting money in the ground, but if you give in the right area, yes the money too will come back to you multiplied.

Isn’t it nice to know that we can count on nature to give back to us what we give to it?  Not only do we get back what we plant but it comes back multiplied.

When have you seen a corn seed planted and after the stalk of corn grows it only yielded an ear of corn with only one kernel?  That would be a pretty funny looking corn cob.  When the stalk grows it not only yields several ears of corn but will continue to do so throughout the growing season.  That one seed you planted will most likely return to you a thousand fold.  Wow! What a nice return on your investment.

Now let’s relate this to our lives.  You may not be a farmer but you can still plant seeds.  You can plant the seed of a warm smile, a kind uplifting word, an understanding ear to a friend in need or a word of encouragement.

What would you like to see more of in your life?  Whatever the answer to that question is, that is exactly what you need to give.

However, you must do this with the right frame of mind.  Do not give just to get.  Give with an open heart.  Do not plant a nice word today expecting to get it back immediately from the same person you gave it to.  Give freely to as many people as possible and in time, like the corn you will harvest the fruits or vegetables of your labor.

Personal Responsibility

In the long run, we shape our lives, and we shape ourselves. The process never ends until we die. And the choices we make are ultimately our own responsibility.  – Eleanor Roosevelt

Self Esteem and a Positive Challenge

I recently read that 90% of the population has an issue with low self esteem.  Wow, that seems like a high number.

I am sure you are familiar with the saying “Sticks and Stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me.”

Remembering that phrase when someone verbally attacks you may help you get through the moment.  However, nothing could be further from the truth.  Sticks and stones leave physical bruising and marks that for the most part, in time heal.  Words on the other hand, while they do not leave outward sign of damage still cause hurt and pain.  The scars are on the inside and cripple that intangible thing called our self esteem.

Think back to when you were a child.  How many times did you hear the words: stop that, quit it, your slow, your fat, your ugly, your….fill in blank with your own experience.  Kids can be pretty brutal.

I was asked once to take notice of the positive and negative statements that I observe in a day.  Statements that were made to me, about me or around me about other people, in addition take a close look at what I say to others as well as myself.  Try that for a day and see what you results you find.  You might be surprised at how biased the outcome will be in favor of the negative talk.

I would like to give you a challenge.  Choose a day of the week and refuse to say anything negative about someone.  Refuse to take part in any negative conversations.  Refuse to read or listen to any negative media.  You will be pleasantly surprised at how you feel at the end of the day.  If you can make it through a day try two, maybe a week or a month.  Don’t worry if you slip now and again, but be willing to start over.

If you chose to take the challenge please let me know by leaving a comment below.  I would like to hear how it came out for you as well if you would be willing to share your experience in future post.

As a parting thought; if you or someone you know suffers from low self esteem or low self confidence I would like to suggest to you one of my favorite audio programs “Maximum Confidence” by Jack Canfield.  Just click the link below to get your own personal copy or to give one as a gift.

Maximum Confidence

Don’t forget to leave a comment if you chose to take the challenge.  I look forward to hearing from you.

Getting Things Done

I am always looking for ways to better manage my time and be more organized. Like everyone else I have a business life, a family life and a personal life.   It is an ongoing, renewing and changing process to balance each of these areas.   I have tried paper planners, various software programs as well as a couple of PDA’s, unfortunately none of these were a perfect fit.  Does any of this sound familiar to you?

Some time back, I purchased an audio program titled “Getting Things Done with work-Life Balance” by David Allen.  When looking for new items for my personal development library, I usually choose an audio program.  This way, I have the option of listening to the information during my commute to the office, when out on a business trip or any other place I choose.

What I have found of interest in David’s program is that he does not push you into a particular system such as a planner or software program.  Rather he offers an overall view of information processing, which is what organization and time management is all about.

What better time, with the beginning of a new year to get yourself on track and take control of your time.  Click on the link below to get your own personal copy of David Allen’s “Getting Things Done with a work life balance” from Nightingale Conant.

No matter your level of priorities, emails and calls, you’re only MINUTES from finding a balance. A balance between busy, yet relaxed. A balance between work and home. David Allen’s 5-phase automated system reveals your simpler, most successful life.

The Cost of time

“Days are expensive. When you spend a day you have 1 less day to spend. So make sure you spend each one wisely.” -Jim Rohn

If you will, imagine the sound of a clock……tic toc, tic toc, tic toc.  That was three seconds that just past.  Three seconds of your life that you cannot get back.

We all have a finite 24 hours given to us as a gift each day.  We cannot save time, store it, borrow more, slow it down or speed it up. All we can do is spend it.  Time is a precious thing because of this.

The question is, how are you spending your time?  Spend it wisely because it is your life passing.  Once time has passed you cannot get it back.  Make the seconds, minutes, and hours of today count.
